MadHattan

Can I tell you about...Easter Sunday in New York? It's been a tradition that every Easter Sunday, New Yorkers parade down Fifth Avenue showing off their masterpieces. Calling them hats would be putting it mildly. Marie Antoinette may have been an inspiration for some of these brave souls. 'Everything but the kitchen sink' made it on top of some of these creations.
I asked my Mom take some photos of these whimsical hats. On a side note, my Mom is quite the photographer as you can see. She's been taking photographs as a hobby since I was in high school. She joined a photographer's club and was the only woman. Needless to say, when their club would photograph female nude subjects, it brought about an awkward and uncomfortable energy in the room. But that's another story.

Back to these fantastic hats. Aren't they just fabulous?! I love it when people shake off their inhibitions and go to the extreme, even if it's just for a few hours once a year. Okay, so maybe these folks also do something outrageous for Halloween but nonetheless, I think it's great.
Looking at these photos makes me miss Wigstock. That's what I love about New York, anything goes.

New Yorkers are a wacky bunch of people that's for sure. Looks like it was a lot of fun to watch. Was there a contest as well?

Hilarious! Are these rented hats or their own creations? Some of these probably took months in preparation. Who has the time these days? Talk about dedication. Funny pics.

I added your site to the commentary.

Your photos are spectacular!! When were they taken? I didn't get to the parade until 2 PM after brunch so I must have missed most of the fancy bonnets.

Hey - just reading your Elle Style Scout exclusive! Was just in NY. Am kicking myself (with my Converse) that I didn't get to your store. The shoes are beautiful!

"...for in your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it/You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade...On the Avenue, Fifth Avenue, The photographers will snap us/And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure..." The song and the tradition lives on. Thanks for the awesome pics!

those hats are a little too subtle for me...I prefer a bolder choice, something that's really right in your face

Rafe, I love your handbags and would love to blog about them on my site! ps. read your bio and saw you were a pino, my bf's a fellow pino! I can't wait to go to manilla, hopefully this summer. Did you catch Andrew Zimmerman's bizarre foods in the phillipines last week on the food network (my other love)

Great hats, and a few that I missed seeing in person.

I miss Wigstock, too. Gone but not forgotten. Too bad that Lady Bunny & Murray Hill didn't make it to the Easter Parade.
