Thank you Susan

Can I tell you...about Susan Scafidi. She writes a blog called Counterfeit Chic that highlights the intrigues and drama surrounding the counterfeit ( a.k.a knock off ) industry. As a small designer company, being copied is not a compliment at all, despite what people may say. In fact, it is quite the opposite. It is downright nasty, disgusting and despicable! We work very long hours, months at a time and travel all over the world to create something unique and distinctive for our customers and all these companies have to do is print the page from the internet or buy the bag in a store and presto, they have a full collection. No product development time for them. Susan writes about the evils of this kind of business and brings to light certain companies who thrive on this kind of unethical practice. Thank you Susan, you're my hero. Here's her article about The Rape of Rafe.
I've forwarded her post to all my friends and contacts and they in turn have done the same. I believe that the more people are aware and that if they stop buying from these companies, maybe it will eventually convince these companies to stop copying. Okay, so maybe I'm being too idealistic but this kind of theft must be discouraged. Help me spread the word!
There's a particular website that claims they are 'inspired' by me. This is how they get around the law, it's a loophole in the legal system. It's something the CFDA is working towards changing. Coincidentally they're also inspired by a lot of other big brands. They even have the audacity to put my photo in their website and give me my own 'page'. Adding insult to injury, they have a 'blog' that writes about how they're inspired by other designers and other gossipy items that nobody cares about.
I'm writing about it because I'm hoping that by reading about it here, and I know there are a lot of you who read my blog, you can spread the word about this injustice and discourage people from supporting thieves like this.
Instead of buying a 'cheap fake', why not buy an 'affordable original'. Right? Just go to my site: www.rafe.com. We're currently on sale and our regular price merchandise won't break the bank, I promise!

you know i've never understood people who buy fake bags... how can people walk around with something knowing that it's a cheap knock off? i'd be so embarrassed.

my motto is if you can't afford it, you shouldn't be buying it. there are so many other products out there that are good quality and affordable, buying a cheap imitation of something is just inexcusable.

You most certainly can tell us about this!

I also do not understand why people would knowingly buy a fake. It's worth it to put aside alittle extra and INVEST in the real thing, frankly.

There's a fine line with the 'inspired by' and I agree that many companies hide behind that credo.

Sadly, the number of people who are 'proud' of their knock-off Chanel bags because they only cost $10 is also part of the problem.

You're more than welcome, Rafe -- thanks for the great bags! And if you (or anyone else) catch other copycats, please let me know.

All my best,
Susan

I just don't like that they blatantly admit "we coped x" and even gave the bag the same name.

but i am against copying a company's logo and fake celebrities designers such as jessica simpson.

i read a quote where she was reviewing photos of her from an event (allure mag maybe?)& she was wearing a certain pair of shoes & she couldnt remember what brand they were and she said something to the effect of "well who cares I'll just knock them off and say I designed them." classy.

This is OUTRAGEOUS!

"Inspired by"?! More like copied from!

Jessica Simpson = no style whatsoever. I'm appalled that they put her on the cover of the latest Harper's Bazaar.

This is absurd!
I hate fake, cheap or not! If it is something I can not afford, I wait, save money and than get it. If it is not original I don't buy it.

Sorry to hear the "daylight robbery" of your work.

I noticed so many counterfeit stuff in Asia, so much more so than in the NYC Chinatown. Scary!

I am proud to say that I only bought the real thing thru your website. I agree with thwany that if one cant afford it then dont buy one.

Proud to be a Filipino.

Ugh! I can't stand the fakes....WHY?
Especially with so many affordable alternatives (Rafe or Devi for Target!). It's just tacky.

thank you for posting this, I can only imagine how you feel, as you are being copied on such a huge scale...

I recently had a fellow artist type buy some of my work, only to have a strikingly similar collection of pieces come from her shortly thereafter...I felt as if I had been kicked.

i really hate those people who strut there stuff in fake LV or chanel. i really cant understand why they have to buy the fake one. if they say i dont have the money to buy the real thing then buy other brand u can afford. i have seen a lot of people here in the philippines who do that. and if my friends do it i really confront them.
